Hi – I’m Kate. Welcome to I Like Words.
A little bit about me – I’m British by birth but spent my school and university years in South Africa, hence my occasional foray into South African politics. I spent 20 years living in and around London, still the most exciting city in the world in my opinion, though am currently embarking on a new life in the Lake District, which is in a whole different category of excitement.
This is a general interest blog which is not intended to focus on any one topic in particular, though topics such as current affairs, politics, technology, feminism and social media tend to crop up most frequently. I’m an IT contractor by profession so this blog is very much a hobby – mostly it’s a tool for me to feed my addiction to news and politics and try to make sense of what I often feel is a world gone mad, while also indulging my love of writing (and my occasional need to get on my soapbox).
Those who know me well, know that I’m pretty opinionated, so hopefully I’ll find enough material to keep the posts coming and hopefully some of you out there may enjoy reading what I have to say. I don’t claim to be an expert in any of the subjects I write about – most of my blogs are inspired by my own efforts to understand a particular topic and so tend to be based on what I have read elsewhere. Opinions, though, are very much my own and I am happy to be corrected if I have got anything obviously wrong.
Finally, a brief note about the name of this site. It’s shamelessly stolen from a job application letter written by a man named Robert Pirosh, who was applying for a job as a screenwriter. I’m always a sucker for a tale of ingenuity and a ‘go get it’ attitude, and I loved both the letter and the fact that it got him the job he was looking for. The letter and further background can be found here.
